THE PITILESS UNIVERS of DOG SHOWS in ENGLAND

London from our correspondent

After Gloucester ‘s serial killer murders, England believed to have seen all which was possible in horror. But this cynophile kingdom is discovering in the felted world of pedigree shows : aggressions sometimes mortals made by participants against their rival’s dogs.

Behind the spectacle of these contests exists a pitiless world where all thiings are allowed. During the last Crufts Show, the most important event of the season, founded in 1891 and where 21 622 dogs participated, one of the judges, the president’s wife, received a threat of death obliging the couple to dismiss. In addition, a honest exhibitor has poisoned a Doberman by slipping a sedative into its meal.

During the course of other tests, the official veterinary has saved at the point of death, several dogs which had absorbed herbicides, hallucinogenic or other preparations destined for the destruction of rodents. Here a coat was wasted by acid, dyeing or painting, there a wicked hand has cut a bunch of hairs. A jealous has even used a whistle to disturb the competitors in the ring.

Since ten years, one does not count any more the number of serious incidents the Show organizers have signalized to the police " One imagines a universe very middle class, very civilized who looks as butter won't melt in his mouth. But there is a handful of participants ready for crime to win the first price, which gives the descent an appreciable extra value. It is a very insular universe inhabited by people who often have nothing else in the life that these dogs shows.” explains Bevery Cuddy, director of the magazine Dogs Today.

If you listen to her, the profit is not the main motivation of the competitors : when in the United States a first price represents 10 000 dollars, the winner in Crufts 2004 has received, in addition to the trophy and a diploma, a 555 pounds cheque a small gift from the sponsor and some dog food tins.

One imagine the emotion these Dog Shows cause in a country with more than seven millions dogs and where no traveller, even exhausted will ever dare to take the seat of a dog in a train.
